Im trying diffrent distro's
So I am going to be trying diffrent distro's on Microsoft Virutal PC and reviewing them. Thus far, both Linux Mint, gOS Space, and DSL (Damn Small Linux) have been unsuccesful.
After all is done, I might try myself at Osx (Hackintosh)

Re: Im trying diffrent distro's
I've tried a couple. I have an old laptop (500MHz) I wanted to put Nix on and with the small amount of RAM it has (256), the fancier distro's like Ubuntu wouldn't run on it. I found a nice one that does, called Puppy - http://www.puppylinux.org/. It has a very small footprint (around 100mb) and is capable of running entirely in RAM making it extremely fast.
I also run Ubuntu on my gaming PC (as well as WinXP and Win2k). With Ubuntu, I run Compiz Fusion and it's pretttty.
I thought about giving OSX a try, but getting this damn computer to work in a triple boot was already a pain in the ass and I didn't want to nerf my hdd.

on your older PC you should try DSL (Damn Small Linux), it has the SMALLEST footprint I am aware of with an install size of 50MB, and you can carry it on a usb thumbdrive and load it up ontop of windows

Puppylinux is a lightweight version of Slackware, which is a very dependable distro. It all depends what you want it for. I have DSL (Damn Small Linux) on a USB stick, so I can surf the web, etc on other peoples PC's without them being able to track what sites I was on, or SAVE my passwords...
Re: Im trying diffrent distro's
Not bad. Sounds pretty useful actually, though I couldn't see myself needing to hide what sites I were on unless I was infecting a friends computer as a prank.Thomson85 wrote:Waldo wrote:Try out puppy linux. I hear that isn't to shabby. good luck I guess.

Re: Im trying diffrent distro's
Ultimate Edition (ubuntu with some cool shit) is a good linux distro I tried out recently. If my HD hadn't failed I would still be using it. I wish it was ready for the "average consumer" but im sure many will be disappointed that their games will not work. However the ease of use for web design and other dev is a huge plus. Install Php+mysql+pearl+FtP and your set. Its too bad im going to have to format what I have left.
To everyone who trusts their hd's to last. They wont. This has nothing to do with linux but I had a HD fail on me a few days ago and now im unable to launch insurgency even after trying to re-dl and now my xp kernel is fucked because it didn't backup properly to the other 2 hard drives i have running. Of course the warranty was for one year and now im debating on buying some kind of cheap external backing it all up and then buying a new TB hard drive. Here I was thinking raid would save me, it sort of did, but I have lost the ability to play insurgency and counterstrike source (my guess is because I installed those first thing when i bought this desktop 2 years ago)

No, im not an asshole. It's not so much as hiding what site I am on as much as it is, i've had people use keyloggers or IE auto saves my password to certain sites. Since DSL is a different OS, it's secure.

Only run RAID if you're prepared $$$ to switch them out every 2 years (2yr failing point). They can only write over each sector so many times before failure, it's how they are made... read up on them.
Re: Im trying diffrent distro's
Ah, makes sense. If you're looking for secure I've heard about another Linux OS called EnGarde, the website is here (http://www.engardelinux.org/). Though it's not actually out to the public or something you could try, try looking up Goobuntu if you haven't already, it's a nice read on google's personal OS.Thomson85 wrote:Waldo wrote:Not bad. Re: Im trying diffrent distro's
yea i figured, its like the assholes who make cars purposely fail when the speedometer hits 100,000 clicks.
Not to mention I easily grab/delete 100 gigs from usenet a week. I am disappointed tho considering the hefty price tag that came with this computer and the "expert" who suggested the hard drives to me.
I'll have a new Terabyte by tonight ($189.99) hopefully that will put me on track their getting cheaper but still slightly worried I'm going to lose it all again if the saying "you get what you pay for" holds any merit.
Im not that informed on dual booting linux can someone please tell me if its possible to share files between the partitions(probably a dumbass question) I virtualized Ubuntu before and it had slight performance issues.

Re: Im trying diffrent distro's
My friend dual-boots Windows Vista and Ubuntu 8.10. Though I don't do it personally I've heard him say he can access his windows files through Ubuntu, not sure if it works over partitions or not though. I'll probably look it up though, if I find anything I'll let you know here.blaze24/7 wrote:yea i figured, its like the assholes who make cars purposely fail when the speedometer hits 100,000 clicks.

Re: Im trying diffrent distro's
I triple boot Win2k, WinXP and Ubuntu. Ubuntu can read, copy, write etc to the windows partitions, but windows can not access the Ubuntu partitions. I'm sure there's a way to get Win to access the *nix partitions, but I haven't ever tried.
Re: Im trying diffrent distro's
A quick search showed up with these two links for accessing Ubuntu partitions through windows:

Re: Im trying diffrent distro's
Thanks guys at the moment I plan on partitioning with XP, I dont think I'll need to read files from ubuntu in windows but rather I want all my music/video/pictures all available from the win partition in ubuntu so its my understanding that I will be able to access these files from ubuntu on a dual boot? I hope so. grateful for the links Waldo thank you i will give the fs-driver a try I cant stand transferring files back and forth.
I liked how when I virtualized I could select whatever folders I wanted to share but these look perfect Thanks
and as added bonus it might actually detect my video drivers and I wont have to use the vmware shit

Re: Im trying diffrent distro's
Success! much easier than I imagined.
For anyone who may be in a similar situation as me who wants to dual boot a single hd with multiple partitions
for this im using a newly installed 1TB HDD
a) pick a linux distro, burn it to a disc
b) install hdd, start computer, go to bios set to correctly boot from disc and make sure the hd was detected.
c) put windows disc in drive and reboot
d) create 1 partition to hold your windows programs I set mine to 150 gb
e) install xp and all your drivers etc takes a while because of the constant need to reboot (XP )
f) throw in your linux disc reboot, linux kernel should load (will ask you about your language and keyboard settings, license etc), desktop loads click install icon should be on desktop by default.
g) gPartition or some other partition program depending on your flavor of linux will popup. Create 3 new partitions on whats left of the hard drive as follows:
Linux native mount: / amount:50G
Linux Swap amount:10G
Data mount: amount:800G
click done and watch it install.
h) Grub Boot loader or another program with a similar function (depending on your distro) should pop up make sure all the settings are correct for me their was no problems here by default everything was fine, click okay then set the delay before the boot loader defaults to predetermined partition. 10 seconds by default is fine.
i)reboot your computer to view it in all its glory
Hopefully this will help someone.
note: The linux distro i chose for this was Mandriva get it here

Personally I just run linux virtually via VMware. Though this is not optimal, I do have a quadcore that can run XP and Ubuntu virtually ontop of Vista64 with no lag issues what so ever.
I also run Ubuntu Server Edition as well in VMware... works for me, i've dual booted before, but in my case not needed.
Re: Im trying diffrent distro's
the problem with that is that linux will use the vmware video drivers which are terrible and gnome functions will not work etc. Which is basically part of the much larger problem of it not detecting your real hardware just your vmware windows drivers for bluetooth, internet etc. Its convenient I enjoy'd it and its great for testing different distros but i knew eventually i needed something more permanent. it lagged ass and i have an awesome computer plus i managed to crash linux on several occasions through vmware and have yet to do the same through dual boot.
